Thought Provoking Poets & Writers
Why Poetry?
Howard Gardner introduced a book in 1983 titled, Frames of Mind: The Theory of
Multiple Intelligences
, as a study of learning styles and aptitudes. How many days
are there in June? Most of us go to the familiar "30 days hath September, April,
June and November. This is an example of the Rhythmic Intelligence. Rhythm and
rhyme is a great way to remember and to associate. Many civilizations used the
poetic form to pass down tales of history and cultural learning. Mythology was
often expressed in poetry. The book of Psalms in the Bible contains poetry that is
often used in social customs of sympathy or bereavement.

Where is Poetry Found? Everywhere. That's right. Poetry has been utilized for
thousands of years for teaching, passing down history and culture, as a tool in the
fight for freedom, to express undying love or agonizing pain. Children are
fascinated by the rhythm and the rhyme, and often express their world in poetic
terms. I remember one time when my son was studying the world from the front
seat of the car. He just blurted out, "if you take all of the frontlights of the cars and
put them together, then you will have the sun."
Where to Begin
Before jumping into Dante or Homer there are some less-stressful basics to get
familiar with.

Metaphor. There is a movie that portrays one man's journey with poetry. In Il
Postino
, love is the motivation for the main character, but he cannot find words for
his feelings. As a postman, Mario meets Pablo Naruda and begins to learn about
seeing the world around him. Mario learns the simple basics of metaphor and
expression and his world changes.

Interpretation. Roger Housden has put together several collections of his "ten
poems" series. Within each of these books Roger gives the reader insight into his
own reflections of each of the 10 poems. He also asks the reader questions in
order that the reader will gain a personal connection to each poem. This is a
different experience than when you were exposed to poetry in school. Roger
Housden is the author of
ten poems to set you free, ten poems to change your life,
and
ten poems to open your heart.

Style. Style in poetry, like music, is a matter of taste. Modern poetry has cafe style,
slam poetry, rap, free-verse, greeting card and more. If you tend to have a long
commute and a cd player in your car you have a perfect opportunity to listen to
audiobooks.
The Caedmon Poetry Collection takes the listener through "a century
of poets reading their work."
The Language of Life, by Bill Moyers includes
interviews with the poets in which Bill asks questions about the poet's motivation,
style and expression. This is a personal favorite of mine. The HBO series
Def
Poetry Jam
is a showcase of modern, often slam-style poetry.

Language. When the poet isn't writing they are gathering material. A local cafe is
often a hotspot for poetry for 2 reasons. Conversation at a cafe is often lively,
opinionated, and a buffet of ideas. Poetry readings seem to gravitate to the cafe
setting. To immerse oneself in the language of poetry - to listen to other poets, to
read juicy phrases or to hear haunting lines can often inspire a poet and generally
enhance the vocabuluary.
